  1. The Radio Flyer:

Using and old wagon as shelving is a wonderful way to cross-over from a child’s past to their future. If you don’t have an old wagon they’re easy enough to find at a local garage sale. If you can’t find one there, hang a “wanted poster” in a local elementary or middle school classroom, grocery store or community center. Many parents are trying to clear out their garage of “stuff” they no longer need and are happy if someone will take it away.

Don’t clean up the wagon too much, you want it to look old and well used.

To hang it on the wall simply take off the wheels and use the holes in the bottom for the drywall screws you’ll use to hang it on the wall. (similar to hanging some larger picture frames)

The shelving is simply a 2x4, cut to size so it has a snug fit inside the wagon. For added security you may want to drill a couple screws through the wagon bottom into the wood.

You can also hang an old peddle car on the wall. Hanging matching hubcaps above the twin beds helps pull it all together.
A picture hanger that adjusts will make alignment of all these simple, easy and fast.

Distressed Wood Walls:

Adding some natural elements into a boys room is a nice way to “bring the outside in”. While this style of wood can be purchased online, (it’s actually new & made to look old) you may want to checkout your local lumber yard or hardware store. They probably know of a recent demolition where you can get the wood for free and have it cut to size.

As you can see, the length of the boards vary which gives you complete flexiblity when piecing the wall together. Once cut, installation is simply a matter of nailing the boards to the wall. Keep in mind this will darken the room somewhat so a short wall may be the best way to go.

Boardwalk Bedroom

When it comes to unique this has to be at the top of the list. This boys bedroom makes you feel as if you’re on a boardwalk. To top it all off, the Ferris wheel allows you to pull down any bin you need whithout ever having to reach up.

Wide planking for the bed frame and Ferris wheel support look to be authentic. The weathered edges and distressed appearance of the wood adds to the soft color pallet chosen for both wall paint, bedding and window coverings.

Special attention has been given to the string of lights along the top of the wall. Really helps tie everything together. All of this, combined with the unique, functioning, Ferris wheel, makes this room a
picture perfect hangout for any boy and his friends!!

No matter what theme you pick…and there could be thousands, remember not to over do it. When it comes to decorating, less is more. Choose size appropriate pieces and leave some room for change.

Similar to landscaping, bedrooms tend to “grow” through the years. If you over decorate you’ll eventually end up with clutter.
